Foreword
Greeting friends,
This resource guide has been compiled specifically to reach family caregivers with hopes to
provide much needed information and resources. Carteret County Department of Aging
Services recognizes the importance of family caregivers and wishes to provide this specific
population the support and guidance they need.
At Carteret County Department of Aging Services, helping older adults remain independent is
our number one priority. We strive to support, assist, and advocate for older adults and their
families by offering programs and services that ultimately allow them to age in place
independently in their home longer. Our department is located and operates the Leon Mann,
Jr. Enrichment Center located in Morehead City. We pride ourselves in providing free health
and wellness programming, social events, educational wellness seminars, and for those who
qualify a free nutrition program and transportation to and from the Enrichment Center.
Additionally, specific to family caregivers, we provide a Supplemental Supplies Program.
Supplemental services are available on a limited basis, to assist caregivers caring for frail adults
age 60 years or older or if they are caring for a relative of any age who has been diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s or another related dementia. Examples of supplemental supplies may include; adult
incontinence supply, bed pad, pre-moistened washcloths or liquid nutritional supplements.
Within this guide you will find two components. First a comprehensive list of local, state, and
federal resources for family caregivers. Second, brief exercise and reflection tools for caregivers
to recognize their own needs. Caregivers often experience caregiver burnout because they are
prioritizing the care of others above themselves. Completing these exercises will help to pause
and see what areas of your wellbeing you might need to put first.
We hope that you will find this guide helpful. Please contact us with any questions or further
needs that we may assist you with.

Wellness Wheel Activity
At some point in the process of caregiving for a loved one the caregiver will experience
caregiver burnout. Caregiver burn out happens when a caregiver begins to experience
behaviors beyond typical stress. This may include fatigue, anxiety, depression, withdrawing
from family and friends, or depression. Self-evaluations are an important tool of recognizing if
you are experiencing caregiver burnout. Completing a wellness wheel is one way to reflect on
your wellbeing.
What is a wellness wheel?
A wellness wheel is a visual tool that shows the Eight Dimensions of Wellness. These
dimensions are:
1. Emotional. This describes the ability to successfully cope with your life and relationship.
2. Occupational. The feeling of fulfilment in one’s work.
3. Intellectual. The continuous practice of activities that expand and simulate one’s
intellect.
4. Environmental. Being aware of how your health and wellbeing are affected by social,
natural, and built environments.
5. Financial. Being able to feel confident in your current and future financial state.
6. Social. Having meaningful relationships with family and friends. Being involved in and
contributing to your community.
7. Physical. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle by participating in physical activity, eating
healthy, and being proactive in your healthcare.
8. Spiritual. Feeling a connection and a sense of purpose in your life through religion or
other spiritual beliefs.
Consider completing your own Wellness Wheel on the next page.

Caregiver Self-Evaluation Worksheet
The Health in Aging Foundation’s educational portal website www.HealthinAging.org provides a
wealth of information and tools for caregivers. We encourage you to visit this cite and explore
the benefits it provides to family caregivers. The next two pages is their assessment
questionnaire. When completing this exercise try to set aside time to do this quietly and
without rushing. Take your time to honestly answer each question. Afterwards reflect on your
answers and consider what resources you may need to enrich your own health and wellness.
Use this guide to complete the list of local resources you may need to achieve this.
Consider these strategies to help prevent caregiver burnout.
Stay socially connected with your friends and family. Make it a priority to have time
each day to reach out to a friend or family member.
Avoid feeling guilty about what you are unable to provide for your care receiver. You are
not able to fulfil every need and that is okay. Feel comfortable asking for help when you
need it.
Learn to create boundaries regarding how much and what you feel comfortable doing
when caregiving.
Stay active and exercise, even a 15-minute walk will help.
Learn to reset in situation when needed. When you are feeling frustrated or
overwhelmed use strategies such as deep breaths or a short removal from the situation
to reset yourself.
Find a support group and become active in it. Develop relationships with others who are
going through similar situations.
Ask for help and accept help when it is offered.
Seek help from your doctor if necessary.
