Cal State East Bay has been elevated to “Doctoral University –
High Research Activity,” also known as R2 status, in the latest
Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
2023 FACTS
Online Campus
Cal State East Bay is known as an early adopter, innovator and leader
of quality online education among CSU campuses. In fall 2022, 52.4
percent of instruction was delivered through online or hybrid courses,
with 44.8 percent of instruction being offered completely online.
In addition, 26.9 percent of students are taking courses exclusively
online, and 77.0 percent of undergraduate students and 50.1 percent
of graduate students are taking at least one online or hybrid course.
As of December 2022, 59.4 percent of CSU certified high quality online/
hybrid courses are produced by Cal State East Bay. And as of January
2023, Cal State East Bay is listed as #5 in the nation to have the most
high quality online/hybrid courses certified by the Quality Matters.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTCOMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
In 2021-22 roughly 4,500 students participated in 90,000 hours
of community engagement through coursework and co-curricular
activities, in support of such community issues as economic develop-
ment, education, food security, health, housing security, and sustain-
ability. Community engagement gives students the chance to apply
learning, develop professional skills, and forge social connections
while making a positive impact within our surrounding communities.
The Center for Community Engagement works to ensure all students
have the chance to develop real-world skills by supporting programs
that connect students with the community and each other.
