April 9, 2019
Dear PRD Family,
I was looking back at my letter to you in last summers brochure and saw that I had recalled how it was one of
the worst springs, weather-wise, in recent memoryand its snowing out as I type this letter this yearon April
9
th
sighbut thats okay because were already thinking warm thoughts
Speaking of warm thoughts, our 2019 Cunningham Pond beach stickers have already arrived and are being
distributed to residents and sold to non-residents! Dont wait or youll miss out on all the summer fun at the
pond! Youll notice a new look at the pond this year. Last fall we undertook a long-awaited erosion control project
and added a retaining wall with a French drain behind it in order to prevent all the run-off from the heavy
rainstorms sending our beach sand into the pond. We still have some more work this spring to finish-up, but we
hope this will help keep the sand on the beach, where it belongs!
Other projects we hope to complete this year include: Rebuilding the dugout on Picard field that was destroyed
in the last wind storm, building new dugouts on Ecco field (budget permitting), adding a Human Foosball game
(leftover from last years list), constructing a pump track, doing more repair work to the tennis courts,
sandblasting and repainting Adams Pool (fall), adding brand new water fountains in the playground and by the
tennis courts, and deep-tine aeration of the fields. Additionally, were hoping to be able to add air conditioning,
better lighting and dehumidification to the Community Center so we can sand, repaint, and refinish the floor in
there - giving us the ability to offer basketball games in the building, which will be a huge addition! Some of
those projects in addition to our regular operations will give our maintenance crew plenty to do. Speaking of
which, we will be looking to gain some efficiencies this year by having our Recreation Maintenance Crew work
together with the Public Works Grounds Crew. That means you may see Tim Rose, Mike Ambrosini, Gunnar
Buzzell and Jimmy Stewart working at Adams Playground with Ray Eaton, Riana Bosk, Cam Buffum, Max Richard,
and Liam Smith. On the flip side, you may see our crew down at Putnam Park or on the Common Pathway. Please
let them know if there is something on the grounds that needs our attention and please thank them for all their
hard work, it means a lot to them to know their efforts are appreciated.
Were proud of our employees generally, but this year has been something special. Throughout the year, weve
time and time again noticed our employees doing great things in the community. Ben Garfinkle was nominated and
played in New Hampshire Legends of Hockey Senior All-Star Games. Rachel Hurley was part of the school-
record breaking relay team. Ben Henry, Mather Kipka and Max Richard were all part of the best ConVal boys
basketball team in 20 years. Alyssa Janoch is finishing-up her term as ConVal Interact Club President. Kiera Bell
received the New Hampshire Teachers of Mathematics college mathematics scholarship Congratulations to them
and to all of our seasonal employees who seem to have all made the paper for positive things throughout the year!
Its been about eight years since we last conducted a survey about our programs, facilities and services. Your
opinions are always welcome, of course, but we thought it was about time we asked again formally. Thanks to
Recreation Committee member, Kate Coon, weve undertaken a strategic planning process and we want to gather
your thoughts and opinions not only about what we currently have and offer, but also about how youd like our
future to look.
Heres the link to our survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PRD-2019 or scan the QR code below.
It only takes a few minutes to complete and wed really like to hear from you so please take the time to help us
better serve you. Your feedback is invaluable as we make decisions on programming, facilities, and budgeting
priorities. The survey is open through May 17th. Thank you, in advance, for your participation!
See you on the Playground,

Summer Playground
Program
Leaders: Abigail Cail and Roni Parker
Want your child to enjoy the summer
outside? Come and romp with other
friends in the playground program here at
the PRD!! The Playground Program
offers girls and boys (entering 1st through
6th grade in the fall) a wide variety of
enjoyable and challenging summer
opportunities, and includes optional
weekly field trips.
Between the pond, pool and the splash
pad, there are plenty of opportunities to
keep the kids cool during the hot summer
months. The program runs for 8 weeks,
Monday through Friday, 8:30am to
4:30pm. This program starts on 6/24 and
ends on 8/16 (half day). One may register
for the whole program or individual
weeks. To register, go to
www.peterboroughrec.com.
Throughout the summer, the PRD has
other programs going on, ie: group tennis
lessons, a soccer clinic by GPS as well as
swimming lessons. There may be more
offerings as we get closer to the start of
summer. If you register your child for any
of these programs that occur here on the
property, we will make sure your child
gets to and from the programs safely.
These programs are offered at an
additional cost.
All registrants will be receiving a parent
handbook in early June which will include
general information as well as field trip
guidelines and release forms. We will
also have a playground program open
house before the program begins - save
the following date:
Tuesday, June 18

New for 2019: If your incoming
6th grader (for the fall of 2019) wants
more of a challenge, we are opening up
the second session of Summer Teen
Challenge to them! If you want a
supervised program all summer, you can
register for the first 4 individual weeks of
the Playground Program and then register
for the second session of STC. Space is
limited in the STC program, so if you
think your child might be interested in this
option, we suggest you register sooner
than later.
Is this GREAT NEWS or
WHAT!??!!

community service and good choices

Summer Teen Challenge
Organized by: Jordan Mills, Maddy
Perry and David Weber
Spread the word! Talk it up amongst
your child(ren) and their friends!
Past participants have said that this
program is a blast!!
The Summer Teen Challenge's (STC)
philosophy is to challenge kids to think
and act on issues that they will be
confronted with as teenagers. Program
activities help build self-esteem and
encourage kids to work as a team. The
group goes camping overnight a couple
of times and wraps up the four week
program with a big trip!
The program was developed to enhance
communication skills and positive
interactions among peers. Through
activities and field trips, kids learn the
value in trusting others while
encouraging reliability, responsibility
and resourcefulness. Part of this program
is also dedicated to trying to guide the
teens away from anti-social and risky
behavior by building self-confidence and
the ability to stand up for themselves in
questionable situations.
New for 2019:
We listened and are going to try a new
mixand see how it works out. We are
opening Session 1 of STC to incoming
10th graders and opening Session 2 to
incoming 6th graders. There were
several 9th graders last year who wanted
to do it again and several 6th graders
who wanted more of a challenge...so
here we go!! Space is limited so register
now if your child(ren) are interested in
attending!

Pack 8 - Peterborough, NH
Since 1930, Cub Scouting has offered
fun with a purpose to millions of
American children. Thanks to our many
volunteers, these Scouts develop values,
learn skills, make friends, strengthen
family relationships - and have a great
time in the process!
Here in Peterborough, Pack 8 was first
chartered in March 1941 and we're
happy the tradition continues today.
By now, youve heard the
announcement by the Boy Scouts of
America that girls are allowed to join
Cub Scout Packs. Pack 8 was one of the
first Packs in the state to allow girls as
Cubs. We have several girls currently
registered with the Pack. This past year
we also had our first group of Lions -
Kindergarten aged children (with their
adult partners). What great
opportunities for more kids to
participate in Cub Scouting! The Pack
will participate in the Chuckwagon
Derby, the Fishing Derby, and the
Memorial Day parade in May, campout
at Cunningham Pond in June, and will
attend the Mt Monadnock District's Cub
Scout Day Camp this summer!
Throughout the year the Pack does lots
of fun activities like the famous
Pinewood Derby in February and our
annual Cub Campfire in October! No
one is turned away due to an inability to
pay. If finances are an issue, please
speak with Recreation Director, Jeff
King.

one outing a month such as a canoe trip,
a hike, a bike ride, rock climbing,
swimming, or camping. Scouts are
expected to participate in various
fundraisers throughout the year to help
cover the costs of some of our
adventures.

General Registration
Information
All programs have enrollment limits.
Please register early to avoid
disappointment. Program content may
be altered at the discretion of the
instructor(s) and may, in some instances,
deviate from the description of the
program in our publications. If there is
ever a question, please feel free to call us
at 924-8080. The PRD retains the right to
change any of the information in any PRD
publications if based upon typos and/or
extraordinary circumstances.
Check out our website periodically for
program descriptions, existing and new,
at www.peterboroughrec.com

it as convenient as possible. You can
either:
1) Go online, set up a household
account and then register for
activities:www.peterboroughrec.com.
2) Stop by our office or call 924-8080
during business hours and we can
help you set up an account and

which you are interested.

until payment is made.
Returned Check Policy
A $27 processing charge plus certified mail
charge will be assessed for any checks
returned by your bank.
Refunds
All refund requests must be in writing.
When a participant drops a program,
instructional and other costs must still be
met. If you are dissatisfied with a program
after the first session, you must let us know
before the second session (unless otherwise
noted) to receive your refund.
In the event of an extended illness or
injury, we will issue a pro-rated refund
after the start of the program. We must be
notified immediately, however, and prior to
the end of the course.
We cannot issue refunds for trips, special
events, or ticketed events unless a
replacement has been found.
Community Organizations
Many of the sports leagues and other groups
in Peterborough are run by independent, non
-profit organizations with their own boards
of directors. The PRD may offer physical
and/or technical assistance to these
organizations. The administration of these
groups, however, is handled by volunteers
for the various organizations. The
following is a list of contact people for these
organizations. They should be contacted
directly regarding any questions pertaining
to the groups they represent.

SPECIAL SERVICES
FOR SPECIAL PEOPLE
WITH SPECIAL
NEEDS
Our staff believes in serving all people
in a special way. However, we know
that some children and adults have
different needs based on physical,
social, or emotional conditions. Please
call us at 603-924-8080 and ask if your
needs can be met in a particular
program. We may be able to advise
you on program selection or custom
tailor an existing program. We
welcome your suggestions, they may
lead to a totally new program!
HOW TO WATCH A
GOOD PROGRAM DIE
Nothing kills a recreation program
faster than participants who wait until
the last minute to register. There is a
point when a program must be
cancelled or modified if there is
insufficient registration. All programs
require a high level of coordination
often including facility scheduling,
staffing, volunteer recruitment and
purchasing of supplies.
