Hi and welcome to the Thurgood Marshall College Video Tutorial on Transfer
Agreements and General Education (GE) Requirements for transfer students. In this
video, we will discuss eligibility and requirements for different types of transfer
agreements as well as how these agreements will affect your GE requirements.
Let’s begin!
If you transferred from a California Community College, you may have completed the
Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum, otherwise known as IGETC.
IGETC is a series of courses that transfer students attending California Community
Colleges may complete to satisfy lower-division GE requirements across the UC
campuses.
If you started IGETC, but did not complete all the requirements, you may qualify for
Partial-IGETC. For Partial-IGETC status, you may be deficient no more than two
requirements, before transferring to UC San Diego.
If you transferred from another campus within the University of California (UC) system,
and completed all lower-division GE requirements prior to transferring to UC San Diego,
you may qualify for UC Reciprocity.
If you attended either a four-year campus or an Out-of-State two-year campus and
completed all lower-division GE requirements at that campus prior to transferring, you
may qualify for GE Certification.
If you do not meet the criteria for the transfer agreements that were described at any
institution, you are considered an Articulation Student.
We will look into each of these transfer agreements more closely.
If you transferred from a California Community College and completed all IGETC
requirements prior to transferring to UC San Diego, you may be IGETC Certified.
Please keep in mind that some Community Colleges do not include IGETC with course
transcripts. You should ask to have both transcripts and certification mailed to the UC
San Diego Admissions Office, so that they can be verified and posted to your Academic
History.
If you are verified as IGETC, you will be cleared from all of your lower-division GE
requirements for Marshall College and will only need to complete two upper-division
Disciplinary Breadth GE requirements.
If you transferred from a California Community College and followed IGETC, but did not
complete all the requirements, you may have Partial-IGETC status. To qualify for
Partial-IGETC, you can be deficient no more than two requirements, prior to transferring
to UC San Diego.
Be sure to have your official Partial-IGETC Certification sent directly to the UC San
Diego Admissions Office. As a reminder, this certification may be separate from your
course transcripts.
Students with Partial-IGETC status will be required to complete any deficient areas from
their IGETC as well as two upper-division Disciplinary Breadth GE requirements. We
recommend that you meet with an academic counselor at Marshall College in the fall
quarter to discuss options for completing your missing IGETC areas.
To verify that your IGETC or Partial-IGETC has been certified by UC San Diego, check
your Academic History on TritonLink.
First, log on to tritonlink.ucsd.edu and find the section titled “Tritonlink Tools.” A link to
view your Academic History is located under the section titled “Grades & Transcript
Tools.”
Once you are on your Academic History, you will be looking for the Transfer Courses
section. If your certification has been posted, you will see the words IGETC Certified or
Partial IGETC Certified. They will be listed in alphabetical order.
Here is a sample Academic History page that indicates that this student’s IGETC has
been posted along with all other transfer coursework from the student’s previous
institutions.
In this next sample Academic History page, it indicates that this student’s Partial-IGETC
has been posted. Also note that in the case of Partial-IGETC, it will show the specific
area or areas needed to be completed at UC San Diego.
If you have Partial-IGETC, we recommend that you meet with an Academic Counselor
at Marshall to discuss options for completing your deficient IGETC areas.
If you transferred from another campus within the UC system, and completed all lower-
division GE requirements prior to transferring to UC San Diego, you may qualify for UC
Reciprocity.
To be certified, you must have your original campus submit a “Letter of Reciprocity” on
university letterhead that certifies that you completed all lower-division GE requirements
at your previous UC campus to Thurgood Marshall Academic Advising.
Our mailing address is as follows: Thurgood Marshall Academic Advising, 9500 Gilman
Drive MC: 0509, La Jolla, CA 92093.
Alternatively, you may have your Letter of Reciprocity sent electronically to the Marshall
Advising email address: tmcadvisi[email protected].
If you are certified for UC Reciprocity, you will be cleared from all lower-division GE
requirements for Marshall College and will only need to complete two upper-division
Disciplinary Breadth GE requirements.
If you are missing no more than two of your lower-division GE requirements from your
previous UC campus, we recommend that you meet with an Academic Counselor at
Marshall during the fall quarter to discuss your options.
If you transferred from another four-year campus or Out-of-State, two-year campus and
completed all lower-division GE requirements at that campus prior to transfer, you may
qualify for GE Certification.
If you are seeking credit for GE Certification, you must obtain a Letter of Completion of
GE requirements from the campus in which these requirements were satisfied. This can
be obtained from an Academic Counselor from your previous campus in the form of an
official letter on campus letterhead addressed to Marshall Academic Advising, certifying
completion of the GE requirements.
Our mailing address is as follows: Thurgood Marshall Academic Advising, 9500 Gilman
Drive MC: 0509, La Jolla, CA 92093. You may also have formal letters sent
electronically to the Marshall Advising email address: tmcadv[email protected].
If you qualify for GE Certification, you will be cleared from all of your lower-division GE
requirements for Marshall College and will only need to complete two upper-division
Disciplinary Breadth GE requirements.
If you are missing no more than two of your lower-division GE requirements from your
previous campus, we recommend that you meet with an Academic Counselor at
Marshall during the fall quarter to discuss your options.
If you do not fall into one of the transfer agreement categories that we described, you
may be considered an Articulation Student. Articulation is the process of determining
UC San Diego course equivalents for transfer courses. Articulation students must
complete all GE requirements that cannot be satisfied through their transfer
coursework.
Your transfer coursework will be evaluated to determine your remaining GE
requirements. You should plan to meet with an Academic Counselor at Marshall
College in the fall quarter to discuss your transfer coursework.
To review, if you have been certified as having IGETC, UC Reciprocity or GE
Certification, you will be cleared from all of your lower-division GE requirements at
Marshall College. You will need to complete just two Upper-Division Disciplinary
Breadth GE courses.
If you have Partial-IGETC, you must complete any deficient IGETC areas as well as two
Upper-Division Disciplinary Breadth GE requirements.
Articulation students must complete all GE requirements that were not satisfied through
transfer coursework.
This information and additional information about GE requirements can be found on the
Marshall College website.
To access the General Education Page, go to marshall.ucsd.edu/ge.
Now that you know the different types of transfer agreements, we will show you how
these agreements will appear on your degree audit. Your degree audit is a checklist
showing all the requirements needed for graduation and the courses being used to fulfil
those requirements.
Your degree audit won’t be accessible until your transcripts are posted, but we want
you to have a look at this information in advance so that you know what to look for later
on. Lets take a look!
This is a sample degree audit.
Items appearing in red indicate that they have not yet been completed. Items appearing
in blue indicate that they have been completed or are in progress.
Your GPA and overall units are listed in the header at the top of the page.
You will notice that your degree audit is split up into three primary areas.
Your Department or Major Requirements appear in the left-hand column. If you have
any questions regarding your major column, you can consult with an academic advisor
from your major department.
Your College Requirements appear in the middle column. If you have any questions
about your college or GE requirements, you can consult with an academic counselor at
Marshall.
Your University Requirements appear in the right-hand column. Be sure to watch our
video tutorial on University Requirements for more information about this section of your
degree audit.
If you entered UC San Diego with a transfer agreement, it will be displayed in the top
left-hand corner of your degree audit, next to your college. As you can see from this
sample degree audit, this student has been IGETC Certified. If you are Partial-IGETC
Certified, your transfer type will be indicated by a “IGETC-P” notation.
Your transfer agreement is also displayed in the middle column, under College
Requirements. Because this student is IGETC Certified, they have been cleared from
all lower-division requirements. The only requirements that appear are the two Upper-
Division Disciplinary Breadth GE courses which appear in red.
If you are UC Reciprocity or GE Certified, your transfer type will appear as “UC
Transfer” at the top of your degree audit. This notation also appears in the middle
column under College Requirements.
As you can see, this student is in the process of completing their two Upper-Division
Disciplinary Breadth GE requirements, as they appear in blue on their degree audit.
Let’s look at a degree audit that does not have a transfer agreement. As you can see,
some requirements have been fulfilled by transfer coursework, as indicated in blue.
Articulated students are required to complete all of the Marshall GE requirements that
their transfer coursework did not satisfy. See an Academic Counselor at Marshall if you
have questions about your remaining GE requirements.
If you believe that you are IGETC or Partial-IGETC Certified, have UC Reciprocity, or
are GE Certified, and your degree audit looks like this, check to make sure that your
Certification was sent appropriately.
That was a lot of information. We hope that you now have a better understanding of
transfer agreements and GE requirements at Marshall College.
If you have any questions about your first quarter courses or the specifics of the GE
requirements, Marshall College Advising will be available during the Online Advising
period in June after you have completed your entries on the New Student Site.
