Each level must have at least two remotely located means of egress. In addition, all rooms used for napping must have
at least two means of egress. One of the means of egress must be a door, and the other can be a window or another
door. Windows being used for egress must meet the following criteria:
Minimum size to be 5.7 Square Feet of clear opening. The opening cannot be less than 24 inches in
height or less than 20 inches in width.
Maximum sill height to be no more than 44 inches from the floor.
Exits must be remotely located from each other. This means that the distance between the two exits
must be equal to or greater than half the diagonal distance of the space occupied in order to minimize the
possibility that both exits will be blocked off by a fire or other emergency condition.
A written emergency evacuation plan must identify the use of emergency egress windows.
Windows and their hardware must be maintained and in good repair at all times.
All exits must be unobstructed at all times:
o Storm windows are not to be used on Emergency Exit Windows.
In an emergency, all occupants of the day care facility must be able to escape from the home or building
in a safe and timely manner.
