ANNUAL REPORT
2022
The Board of Table Tennis Queensland (TTQ) would like to thank the Queensland Government through the
Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport for their continued nancial support in 2022 through the State
Development Program Organisational Support funding.
In addition, the Board recognises that the sport of table tennis within Queensland depends upon the army
of volunteers who organise clubs, events, transportation and Table Tennis Queensland itself. Therefore Table
Tennis Queensland would like to thank all volunteers, coaches, players and parents who have all contributed
towards the success of the sport in 2022.
Finally, Table Tennis Queensland would like to thank all clubs and individual members for their continued
support.
The Queensland Government provides ongoing
funding to Table Tennis Queensland to get more
Queenslanders active through sport and recreation.

The TTQ Board of Management is
comprised of eight directly elected
members.
Half of the Board are elected in odd
numbered years and half in even
numbered years
The Executive Officer is employed on a
full time basis (76 hours per
forntnight)
The Administration Manager is
employed on a part time basis (68
hours per fortnight)
High Performance Manager & State
Officiating Director are employed on a
casual, hours worked arrangement.
For the rst time since COVID-19, obviously
we were able to send Queensland teams to the
respective National Championships. To assist our
Queensland teams in the lead-up to the Nationals,
TTQ held various preparation training camps.
These included: Queensland Senior, Youth, Junior
& Para team camps held in Townsville, Bundaberg
& Wynnum & Queensland Veterans team camps
held in Mackay & the Gold Coast.
A number of our QLD members achieved
outstanding results at the National Championships.
This included Ella Yu winning the Under 13
Girls singles championships. On the back of this
fantastic result Ella was also recognised as a
nalist for the Queensland Junior Sport Star of the
Year award at the Queensland Sport Awards.
On the Para front, Joel Coughlan & Andrea
McDonnell combined to win the Class 6-10 teams
event at the Nationals. Also, our Over 30 Women
(Andrea Nicholson, Pippa-Louise Trass, Emma
Widdup & Jan Yu), Over 50 Men (David Lu, Mark
Mulley, Rodney Perry & Jerrod Thomson) & Over
60 Women (Gayle D’Arcy, Andrea McDonnell, Linda
Yap & Helen Zhang) all won gold at the National
Veterans team events.
A number of Queensland Volunteers were also
recognised at the Table Tennis Australia Volunteer
Awards. This included Frank Chen (Young Ocial
of the Year), Mick Coughlan (25 Years of Service)
& Agnes Herbertson (50 Years of Service). Special
mention to Mick Coughlan, who has the honour of
being awarded the Bev and Brian James Trophy as
the 2022 National Volunteer of the Year.
In addition to this, Joel Coughlan was a finalist at
the QLD Sport Awards for the QLD Para Athlete of
the year. Despite not winning the award, being
recognised as a finalist was still a fantastic result.
On a QLD level, we recognised the following
players via our TTQ Annual Awards:

T
his is my fourth year as TTQ President and 2022
was overall a successful year as we saw the
normal event calendar resume to some normality
post-COVID. This report provides a brief review of
the year, touching on our Board of management
initiatives, to various events and other programs &
initiatives that occurred throughout the year.
Starting with our AGM that was held earlier in
the year, we saw the following people elected to
two-year terms: Trevor Barrett as Vice-President,
Jason Hockings as Treasurer, Simon Mills as our
Southern Board Member & Venkat Vangaveti our
Northern Board Member. I thank all of our board
members for volunteering their time at various
meetings and other events throughout the year.
I’d also like to highlight that our Vice-President
Trevor Barrett was awarded the ‘Service to Sport
Award’ at the 2022 Queensland Sport Awards.
Trevor thoroughly deserves this award and
recognises his signicant contribution to our great
sport over an extended period.
We successfully delivered many educational
opportunities for our member clubs and individual
members. This included a Tops (entry level) &
Level 1 coaching courses held on the Gold Coast.
Tops coaching course on the Sunshine Coast.
Also a Level 2 coaching course held in Brisbane/
Wynnum. While we also saw the launch of our
new State/National Umpire course format, which
saw all of the theory components completed via
zoom and just the practical component in person,
which I’m pleased to report was a great success.
Thank you very much to our various coaching &
ociating course presenters.
In terms of our state events, all our state
championships were successfully held. This
included the following events: Queensland Junior
Championships (Brisbane), Queensland Closed
Championships (Gold Coast), Queensland Open
Championships (Townsville) & Queensland
Veterans Championships (Mackay). Thank you for
these associations that assisted to host the state
championships.

At a club level our Townsville Association
celebrated their 90th Anniversary and successfully
held various events and function to mark the
occasion. TTQ continued to provide support to
our member clubs via our club grant programs.
We funded over $6,500 in funding to our member
clubs towards various participation and other new
initiatives throughout the year.
We supported the Queensland Government on
many occasions throughout the year, but I’d like
to highlight one amazing event we were part of.
Table Tennis Queensland was invited to attend the
celebration of the 50th anniversary of relations
between Australia and China in Queensland by
Queensland’s Deputy Premier Steven Miles. The
Deputy Premier and Treasurer Cameron Dick MP
celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Ping Pong
Diplomacy event with a QLD v China friendly Table
Tennis match. The Deputy Premier and Dr Xu Jie,
Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China
played an informal game of table tennis. The
event was held on the Green Deck at Parliament
House on Thursday 28th October 2021. Our QLD
Junior team members Haneul Kim, Jerry Zhang
and Han Leung got the chance to play against
the special guest Dr Xu Jie. TTQ presented
commemorative QLD team shirts to the various
Government representatives to mark this special
occasion.
We also welcomed the amazing
news that the
2032 Olympics have been awarded to Brisbane.
We have begun the process to work closely with
the various stakeholders to prepare as best as
possible to ensure we capitalise on the many
opportunities that will be presented.
Thank you to our TTQ personnel involved in
delivering our coaching and ociating courses.
Also, to our TTQ staff Jason Walsh and Karen
Carruthers for their efforts throughout the year. I
would also like to acknowledge Jason Walsh for
his 11 years of service to TTQ, and his impending
departure from the role of Executive Officer in
January 2023.
Finally thank you to all our Table Tennis
Queensland members across the state for your
support throughout the year. We have all
certainly faced many challenges throughout the
year, but we thank you for being a member this
year.

introduction
2022 saw Table Tennis Queensland continue to return to
mainly normality with the COVID-19 restrictions easing
for club & state events. I’m pleased to report we were
able to operate with minor impacts and most events &
activities operating as per normal pre-COVID.
ParticiPation
TTQ membership slightly increased from 1557 in 2021
to 1673 in 2022. Pleasingly the overall membership
numbers have returned to pre-COVID numbers. This
was attributed to the improved COVID-19 situation
giving more certainly to member clubs & individual
members. A detailed summary of all club memberships
can be found on the membership section of the report.
events
We successfully coordinated all of our Queensland State
Championships in 2022. I’m pleased to report we saw a
record level of participation at the Queensland Juniors
event with 120 players taking part. We also continued
to trial the Queensland Junior & Senior Championships
being coordinated back-to-back, which received positive
feedback from players involved. All of our association
open events proceeded as planned, with many other
new events held at respective clubs throughout the
year. It’s very pleasing to see our member clubs willing
to trial new and exciting formats and events. Also
our Queensland Schools Championships were able to
proceed this year with players from across the state
qualifying to compete at the state nal. A massive
thank you to all clubs & players for their support of the
state championships in 2022. Also thank you to the
respective associations that hosted the state
championships in 2022. We wouldn’t be able to conduct
these events without your support. Below are the

and the practical component completed in person at
Brisbane Table Tennis. Positive feedback was received
from many course participants and this new format will
be continued in future. These new umpires will continue
their development towards their accreditation over the
next 12 months. Franck Roguiez successfully delivered
a four-day Level 2 Coaching Course at Wynnum in
early 2022. This was the rst Level 2 course held in
Queensland in nearly 10 years, given the changes
to the National Accreditation program. As well, Patrick

PerforMance
Thankfully the National Championships were able to
proceed for the rst time in a number of years in 2022.
The National Junior, Senior, Youth & Para
Championships were held on the Sunshine Coast, while
the National Veterans Championships were held in
Darwin. The detailed results are available via the TTQ
website.
One player in particular to highlight her outstanding
performance was Brisbane local Ella Yu. Ella won the
Under 13 Girls singles title and was also a finalist for the
2022 Queensland Junior Sports Star at the Queensland
Sports Awards.
Thank you to all of our Team Management and
Coaching Staff that assisted with the 2022 Queensland
Teams.
coMMunication
The TTQ newsletter ‘Over the Net’ featured 9 issues
throughout the year. The current mailing list includes
almost 3,400 subscribers and is continuing to rise. The
newsletter included frequent summary of outcomes
from TTQ Board meetings to ensure transparency
on updates and decisions. TTQ is endeavouring to
continue the current format in the coming years to
maintain the increased level of communication with
our associations and members.
governance
Terry Morato has led the Board of Management
throughout 2022. TTQ continued to utilise the new
technology in the form of Microsoft Teams to coordinate
meetings more efficiently.
Many TTQ club meetings were also coordinated
throughout the year. These meetings featured TTQ
Board Members and member club delegates in
attendance to discuss various matters. Member clubs
were given the opportunity to network further with
fellow member clubs as well.
finance
TTQ received the amount of $149,000 (+GST) in 2022
in Queensland Government funding via the
Queensland Sport and Recreation Industry
Development Program.
I can report TTQ is in a very sound nancial position
with adequate financial reserves for the future. The
detailed financial report and audit can be found later
in the report.
concLusion
As I write this report, I have already advised the
TTQ Board of Management my intention to resign in
mid-January 2023 after over 11 and a half years with
the organisation.
TTQ has given me so much during my time with the
organisation. Especially the great relationships I have
established within the Table Tennis community, which
made this decision even more dicult. However it is
time for me to spend more time with my new son and
I’m also planning to complete some additional studies
as I look for a new challenge in future.
I’m very proud of all of my achievements throughout
my time with TTQ, but none of this
would have been possible without the support of all
member associations & the fantastic
coaches, ocials, administrators & volunteers across
the state.
I’d like to thank the various TTQ Board Members that I
have worked with during my time.
In particular Trevor Barrett & Terry Morato, that were
the two President’s I have served under. Thank you
for your guidance and mentorship during my time with
TTQ.
Also thanks to the various sta & contractors that I’ve
worked with. Last but denitely not least, thanks
to Karen, my o-sider in the TTQ oce who has
always provided amazing support to me in my role.

INDEPENDENT AUDITOR’S REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF
TABLE TENNIS QUEENSLAND INC
Audit Opinion
We have audited the financial report of Table Tennis Queensland Inc. (“the Association”),
which comprises the statement of assets and liabilities as at 31 December 2022, and the
statement of profit or loss for the year then ended and the notes to the financial statements,
including a summary of significant accounting policies and the statement by members of the
committee.
In our opinion, the accompanying financial report presents fairly, in all material respects, the
financial position of the Association as at 31 December 2022, and of its financial
performance for the year then ended in accordance with the accounting policies described in
Note 1 to the financial statements and the Associations Incorporations Act 1981 (Qld).
Basis for Opinion
We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our
responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor’s Responsibility for
the Audit of the Financial Report section of our report. We are independent of the
Association in accordance with the Ethical Standards Board’s APES 110 Code of Ethics for
Professional Accountants (the Code) that are relevant to our audit of the financial report in
Australia. We have also fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the
Code.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide
a basis for our opinion.
Emphasis of matter Basis of Accounting
We draw attention to Note 1 to the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting.
The financial report has been prepared for the purpose of fulfilling the Association’s financial
reporting responsibilities under the Associations Incorporations Act 1981 (Qld). As a result,
the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose. Our opinion is not modified in
respect of this matter.

Other Information
The Management Committee is responsible for the other information. The other information
comprises the information included in the Association’s annual report for the year ended 31
December 2022, but does not include the financial report and our auditor’s report thereon.
Our opinion on the financial report does not cover the other information and accordingly we
do not express any form of assurance conclusion thereon. In connection with our audit of the
financial report, our responsibility is to read the other information and, in doing so, consider
whether the other information is materially inconsistent with the financial report or our
knowledge obtained in the audit or otherwise appears to be materially misstated. If, based on
the work we have performed, we conclude that there is a material misstatement of this other
information; we are required to report that fact. We have nothing to report in this regard.
Responsibilities of the Management Committee and Those Charged with Governance for the
Financial Report
The Managment Committee is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the
financial report in accordance with the financial reporting requirements of the Associations
Incorporations Act 1981 (Qld) and for such internal controls as the Managment Committee
determines is necessary to enable the preparation and fair presentation of a financial report
that is free from material misstatements, whether due to fraud or error.
In preparing the financial report, the Management Committee is responsible for assessing
the Association's ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters
relating to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the
Management Committee either intends to liquidate the Association or to cease operations, or
have no realistic alternative but to do so. The Management Committee is responsible for
overseeing the Association’s financial reporting process.
Auditor's Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report
Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report as a
whole is free from material misstatements, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an
auditor's report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of
assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with Australian
Auditing Standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements
can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in aggregate, they
could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users on the basis of
this financial report.
As part of an audit in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards, we exercise
professional judgement and maintain professional scepticism throughout the audit. We also:
Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether
due to fraud or error, design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks,
and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our
opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is
higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery,
intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control.
Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design
audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of
expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the Association's internal control.
Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of
accounting estimates and related disclosures made by the Management Committee.
Conclude on the appropriateness of managment committees' use of the going
concern basis of accounting and, based on the audit evidence obtained, whether a
material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast significant
doubt of the Association's ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that
a material uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our auditor's report
to the related disclosures in the financial report or, if such disclosures are inadequate,
to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up
to the date of our auditor's report. However, future events or conditions may cause
the Associationto cease to continue as a going concern.
Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the financial report,
including the disclosures, and whether the financial report represents the underlying
transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair presentation.
We communicate with the Management Committee regarding, among other matters, the
planned scope and timing of the audit and significant audit findings, including any significant
deficiencies in internal control that we identify during our audit.
We also provide the Management Committee with a statement that we have complied with
relevant ethical requirements regarding independence, and to communicate with them all
relationships and other matters that may reasonably be thought to bear on our
independence, and where applicable, related safeguards.
