Handicap Rules:
•
Contestants not bowling a USBC league in the 2023/24 season must
purchase a $5 Associate Membership prior to bowling.
•
Handicaps are 90% of 230, 230 & higher bowls scratch. Players
without an accepted average must bowl scratch. Actual league
average counts towards the 840 team cap.
•
Minimum entering average for maximum handicap is 140 for
men and 130 for women. Players with lower averages will get the
maximum handicap.
•
Players use their handicap for each event. Example: teammates add
their handicaps together for a team handicap.
•
Each player uses 1/3 of their handicap, dropping fractions, for sidepots
and brackets.
•
Only 1 PBA member per team. NO PBA GUESTS. All PBA members
with a military status are eligible and welcome! Sponsors/host
employees can bowl only if they have a military background. Guests
who have won a PBA or PWBA national title, including PBA 50, U.S.
Open, Masters in 2013 forward are not eligible.
•
Here is how we assign your entering average: Current season
2023/24 is not used unless the bowler has no winter or summer
averages from 2021/22 or 2022/23:
1. First, we take your highest USBC winter average of at least 21
games from the years 2021/22 and 2022/23.
2. If none, we look at those same years from USBC summer leagues
of at least 21 games.
3. Current 2023/24 winter season – summer not eligible.
4. If none, we go back to 2020/21, winter then summer, adding a 10-
pin penalty.
5. If none, we go back to 2019/20, winter then summer, adding a 20-
pin penalty.
6. If none, we go back to 2018/19, winter then summer, adding a 30-
pin penalty.
7. If none of these, the bowler can bowl scratch with a 230 average
that goes towards the team’s 840 cap.
8. Youth averages cannot be used. USBC Rules 319C & 319D apply.
Re-assigning Averages – Tournament
bowlers know that handicap events can attract players that show ability
above their entering league average.
The High Roller staff has been very diligent in “watching” the scoring of
the event and, when necessary, re-assigning a higher average to those
that demonstrate higher ability.
As a protection for the many participants, we continue to monitor scores
via a “watchdog committee.”
Gaining a purposeful advantage over our Military attendees who
have served our country, by using a league average much lower than
ability will not be tolerated.
USBC Rule 319 applies:
Players must report or face disqualification.
61 players assigned higher averages for 2023!
NEW AVERAGE RULES
Each year our High Roller staff has the huge task of verifying thousands
of averages from bowl.com. Many USBC associations around the country
don’t submit their league averages until late in the summer and it has
become impossible for us to have all bowlers verified by bowling time.
Some teams have been found over the 840 cap and have very little time
to make a change. League standing sheets have not been accepted
since they aren’t always up to the last week of bowling.
Instead of turning down teams or players, because they can’t be verified,
we have this change:
Current winter season 2023/24 will not be used with the exception of
those bowlers who fit into the categories listed under Handicap Rules on
this page.
