CHART 4: COMMONLY ABUSED DRUGS AND HEALTH RISKS
Source: National Institute on Drug Abuse, http://www.drugabuse.gov/drugs-abuse/commonly-abused-drugs-charts
Alcohol
Possible Health Effects
Drinking too much on a single occasion or over time – can take a serious toll on your health. According to the
National institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, alcohol can interfere with the healthy functioning of various
parts of your body and cause problems with your brain, heart, liver, pancreas, and immune system. It may
increase your risk of developing certain cancers such as mouth, esophagus, throat, liver, and/or breast. Alcohol
can disrupt fetal development at any stage during a pregnancy. Drinking during pregnancy can cause brain
damage, leading to a range of developmental, cognitive, and behavioral problems, which can appear at any time
during childhood. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is the umbrella term for the different diagnoses.
Combining alcohol with many of the drugs listed below increases the negative health risks associated with the
drugs.
