Abstract: The Klein Family Photograph Collection describes typical activities
of the Klein family and related families, especially events such as
weddings, funerals, holidays, trips, picnics, parties, visits from
friends, and cutting down a tree. Martin and Ella Klein lived on Oak
Street in Glens Falls. There were numerous trips to visit relatives in
Woodbury, New Jersey and also in Denmark and Norway.

Identification Photographs
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Martin K. and Ella Klein were members a family of Scandinavian ancestry. The Martin
and Ella Kleins lived at 19 Oak Street (23 Oak Street, 1945 and earlier years) in Glens
Falls. Martin Klein first appears in Glens Falls City Directory in 1922. His occupation
was a cabinet and pattern maker. He retired in 1946. His wife Hanna is listed
beginning in 1929. Her last listing in 1944; photograph of gravestone of Hanna Klein,
1884-1944. Martin, with wife Ella (his second wife?) appears in the Directory beginning
in 1949. Martin and Ella Klein last appear in Directory in 1969.
Roy M. Klein was a son of Martin K. Klein. He served in World War II, was employed at
General Electric Company in Schenectady. Roy’s wife was Nora and they had a
daughter Susan. Roy was a member of the Church of the Messiah (Episcopal). His
address was 19 Oak Street, Glens Falls. He died in January, 1958. Obituary in Post-
Star, January 16, 1958. Notice of burial in Glens Falls Cemetery, Post-Star, January
18. Nora Klein, widow of Roy, was listed in the Glens Falls City Directory, 1966-1971.
Families evidently related to the Kleins include the Bergguist family, Hamilton family,
Svendsen family, and the Tarrach family (Woodbury, New Jersey). Carl Tarrach is listed
in Social Security Death Index; born 10 September 1905; died February 1978;
residence, Woodbury, NJ.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The collection consists of nine albums and one box containing photographs, mostly
negatives but also some prints. Most of the photographs were taken by Martin Klein, but
some were taken by other family members. Described are typical activities of the Klein
family and related families, especially events such as weddings, funerals, holidays,
trips, picnics, parties, visits from friends, and cutting down a tree. There were numerous
trips to visit relatives, especially the Tarrach family, in Woodbury, New Jersey. There
were also several trips to visit relatives in Denmark and Norway.
Locations of the photographs include: Glens Falls (especially Martin and Ella Klein’s
home at 19 Oak Street); Saratoga; Schuylerville; Fort Edward; Lake George; Glen Lake;
Corinth; Woodbury, New Jersey; Stone Harbor, New Jersey; New York City; Rochester;
Albany; Denver; Canada; Brazil; Norway; and Copenhagen and other locations in
Denmark.
