Yokohama, a Photogenic City

Fumiko Hayashi
Mayor of Yokohama
Yokohama is truly brimming with attractions and appeal. A port where ships from other countries come and go,
Western-style buildings exuding the city’s history from the days of the opening of its port, Sankeien Garden, Chinatown,
and a sleekly modern waterfront area. Its peripheral districts are blessed with a wealth of greenery and afford enjoyment
of the change of seasons in their forested tracts.
Yokohama’s cityscape not only excites visitors but has long been chosen as the site for many TV dramas and movies.
Yokohama achieved vigorous growth and advancement after overcoming numerous difficulties including the devastation
from the Great Kanto Earthquake and bombing raids during the war, and requisitioning of zones by the military after the war. Its districts splendidly
fuse elements of overseas culture, the history of Japan’s modernization, and nature. Scenes of Yokohama make lovely pictures in any period and any
place, and surely form excellent backdrops for stories.
This year, when it is celebrating the 160th anniversary of the opening of its port, Yokohama is going to further disseminate information about its
new charms. Spring will bring Garden Necklace Yokohama decorating our streets with vividly colored flowers and a visit by the Queen Elizabeth at
the new passenger ship terminal on Daikoku Pier. And in autumn, the city will host Yokohama Otomatsuri 2019, a festival of music played on the
streets at various locations, and Rugby World Cup 2019TM, which will be enlivened by city dressing. These and other events will widen the scenery
of Yokohama as a photogenic city that continues to evolve. In the future as well, I hope to attract many visitors from inside and outside Japan, and
continue the creation of Yokohama as an appealing city with a diversity of vistas and faces.
Both the city and ward editions of Koho Yokohama are available for viewing on the website.

guy in the school. One day, Shusei’s cousin Reon (Ryusei
Yokohama) suddenly moves in, thereby starting a three-
person cohabitation?! Like its predecessor, which debuted
in 2014, the movie was shot
