SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES FOR THE NATIONAL READING MONTH
Mystery Reader. A National Kick-off activity where all school administrators, Schools Division
Superintendents, and Regional Directors are directed to be mystery readers of a children’s Filipino
story book during the school’s flag raising ceremony.
All Schools and Learning Centers are also enjoined to introduce Nick Joaquin to all learners through
pictures and a small talk about him.
100 Pictures to Tell. Each class shall create a story to celebrate Philippine culture and arts through
pictures.
Hardin ng mag Bayani. Schools shall spearhead in planting 100 trees in the community. Each tree
shall be named after a Filipino hero.
Reading Challenge. All learners from elementary and secondary schools are encouraged to read
one English and one Filipino book and shall prepare a book report for each.
Senior High School learners shall write a book report on a Nick Joaquin book that will highlight the
importance, the value and meaning of the written work read. Entries should be in English, encoded,
double-spaced, with a minimum of 1,500 words and a maximum of 3,000 words in order to qualify for
the National Book Report Writing. Each book reporter shall defend their report before a panel of
judges. Each Division shall choose entries for the Regional level which shall represent the Region for
a National Contest on January 2018. A separate Memo shall be issued for this purpose.
Meanwhile, all teaching and non-teaching personnel of the Department are enjoined to hold the Drop
Everything and Read at 10:00 am everyday for the month of November. A book sharing activity shall
also be organized once a week to share the book read for the week.
Nick is In. Junior High School learners shall prepare a witty, short narratives through comic strip that
suggests what Nick shall say on the current Philippine issues if he (Nick) is present today.
Each Region shall choose a Regional representative for a National Contest on January 2018.
#Shareabook. All learners, school administrators are encouraged to bring and share their own story
books for children. On the other hand, all teaching and non-teaching personnel and guests to DepEd
conferences are likewise encouraged to share a story book. A drop box shall be displayed for such
purpose.
Reading Camp. A week-long activity that shall highlight the following:
Sang Daang Taon. A writing contest for all learners in writing a one sentence one paragraph
short story to describe the country Sang Daang Taon from now.
Filipino as a Manager . An on-the-spot painting contest to describe Filipino as a manager.
Questions on Heroes. A quiz bee on the Filipino heroes.
Kaya Ko. An on-the-spot reading contest of a one sentence one paragraph story by Nick
Joaquin.
Kuwentuhan Tayo. An on-the spot storytelling contest on any Nick Joaquin’s story for
children.
Nick Report. A newswriting contest on the events of the Reading Camp.
Isayaw Natin. An interpretation of any short story for children by Nick Joaquin through dance.

Reading Challenge (SHS).
Birthday Book Party. 100 learners shall be invited to the party to celebrate the joy of reading
where each learner shall receive a book from the #shareabook activity.

Help a reader. Be a Volunteer. Schools and learning centers shall invite parents and other
community volunteers to help the non-readers and other learners with reading difficulties by adopting
a child and help him succeed in reading.
Reading Family. A symposium for parents and guardian on the importance of reading to their
children at home and on helping their children become successful readers.
Araw ng Pagbasa Challenge. On November 27 at 9:00 am Philippine Standard Time, all learners,
teachers, non-teaching personnel, school officials shall observe the nationwide synchronized reading
activity.
