Uniper SE is an international utility company that generates power across Europe and trades energy worldwide.

We have two main missions: ensure supply security and propel the energy transition. In addition to selling bulk electricity, gas, and heat to

industrial enterprises, we help them to decarbonize. We are also playing a pioneering role in establishing Europe’s hydrogen economy and

plan to develop a sizable renewables business. And in response to the energy crisis, we built and now operate one of the new LNG

terminals in Germany.

As part of its #saplab initiative, Uniper’s

Corporate IT team began a close collaboration

with SAP MaxAttention to streamline business

operations using SAP Business Technology

Platform as the scalable infrastructure to

extend its existing SAP landscape. The team

delivered around 30 business process

improvements and empowered users in plant

maintenance, Procurement, Finance, HR and

IT by digitizing and automating manual, error-

prone processes and creating new workflows

to address emerging business needs.

Uniper is one of the world’s largest power

generators. When separating from a larger

company in 2016, Uniper saw an opportunity

to better use SAP solutions to reduce

bureaucracy and move on from a legacy of

manual and error-prone business processes.

▪ Part of Uniper’s commitment to energy efficiency and

sustainability is a digitalization strategy. To support that, Uniper

needs to enhance existing IT investments with innovative

cloud capabilities that would enable streamlined

and new processes from finance through plant operations,

procurement, HR, to IT.

▪ Having come out of a much larger organization and inheriting

a legacy way of getting things done, Uniper needed to

introduce the nimbleness of a start-up approach to resolve

these challenges and deliver digitalization effectively.

▪ Humanity has committed to tackling climate change by

embarking on a journey to carbon neutrality. Uniper is ideally

positioned to support and even accelerate this journey. And to

make it possible by keeping energy reliable and affordable

along the way. Efficient, digitized, innovative business

Uniper uses SAP solutions to help employees get their work

Using scrum methodology, a project team of seven IT colleagues and several experts from LOBs developed a roadmap of innovation

using SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) to streamline enterprise operations.

The journey began with apps to digitize maintenance processes by combining SAP BTP with SAP Mobile Services and SAP Fiori apps.

Next were apps for process automation for HR and Accounting, replacing manual, error-prone processes using workflows and business

rules.

Lastly, AI-enabled processes were created to address emerging business needs. SAP Integration Suite ensures all applications work

together, easing the move to the cloud while maximizing on-premise investments and meeting the needs of LOBs.

Staff can manage things like inspection reports, invoices, POs, and

HR requests on the go and everything is now paperless.

For example:

▪ The Delegation of Authority (DoA) request process for supplier

POs and invoicing is far more intuitive and has been reduced

from five steps to just one – cutting the time to process

procurement and reducing the error rate.

▪ The GeoFlex app allows employees to easily record their work

outside of their home country while keeping Uniper compliant

for tax and social contributions.

Business processes were not automated, and mobile devices were

not incorporated.

For example:

▪ Requesting workflow roles or release limits for invoice

verification and purchase requisition workflows were done via

an Excel-based template requiring five different process steps.

▪ Employees who wanted to work outside of their home country

had to go through a manual multi-step process, without

tracking or analytics, which created compliance risks.

IT has delivered around 30 process improvements so far and has a

roadmap for many more using SAP BTP.

Among the benefits:

• IT staff can roll out projects consistently, with high adoption

• Accelerated project cycle times with quick adaptation of apps

from one LOB to another without creating new security

• Much simpler IT system maintenance with everything on

one platform

• Enabled the move to the Cloud while leveraging existing on-

premise IT infrastructure

• Can serve the needs of specific LOBs through extension of

and integration with LOB cloud solutions, such as SAP

SuccessFactors

New mobile apps, automated processes, and workflows are now

running in the LOBs, delivering efficiencies in a wide range of use

cases – all enabled and supported by SAP solutions. They

contribute to empowering Uniper’s workforce to be more efficient,

more productive, and more focused on the mission-critical work of

managing energy infrastructure.

Among the results:

• 50% time savings on plant inspections

• 50% faster invoice payments

• 80% reduction in the error rates in procurement and finance

requests

• 25% lower risk related to HR compliance and double taxation

• 70% productivity improvement for handling remote work

requests

place to help prevent errors and compliance violations.

A few examples:

• Maintenance technicians have safety and security protocols for

work orders available to them on their mobile device on-site,

reducing risk while improving health and safety.

• Employees can easily make global mobility requests while HR

can process these more quickly and in line with complex

regulations.

the number of people in-house who can support and accelerate

digitalization efforts by allowing non-technical users to

beginning up to this day. The experts from SAP help with architecture design, the evolution of the roadmap, and the

development of new apps, such as the recently-launched GeoFlex app.

Additional Information

Uniper’s business transformation journey with SAP began with a #saplab initiative with ActiveAttention in 2017. The first pilot was the

Hydro App development. Since then, around 30 additional projects have been imagined, developed, tested, and launched, benefiting all

lines of business. In 2019 all SAP backends on-premises were moved into our Azure tenant and switched from Oracle to HANA DB. Our

future plans? To continue what we started! We are expanding our areas of innovation with SAP, including development of machine learning

solutions. Uniper will migrate HCM to a RISE with SAP environment in 2023 and further S4 projects are planned.

Mobile Workforce Management Hydro: The Hydro App replaced the legacy pen and paper process to document

maintenance activities in Uniper’s hydroelectric power plants in Germany. The app enables working offline.

With this Fiori app the mobile workers of Uniper Anlagen Service are able to record their working and travel time.

Adaptions in the app make it possible to retrieve relevant activities pertaining to salary.

Used in the Production process for carrying out and confirming low risk level routine activities (more commonly

known as First Line Maintenance), The App and Backend configuration is available for use with all country Plant

Maintenance.

Used for the recording of defects while onsite in a plant. The app is currently available for use with the UK &

Germany Plant Maintenance system. This mobile app replicates many parts of SAP transaction IW21 and creates

detailed corrective notifications with attachments. It is designed to operate in both on-line and off-

line modes and

uses multi-user login functionality so that the Functional Location structures can be stored on the mobile device

against each user who registers in the app.

Used for the gas storage company in Gronau

, with a capacity of 500 Mio m3 & 10 caverns. the app transfers the

meter data daily to the SAP PM module, removing the need for pen & paper.

The Enerlytics software is able to predict/forecast the maintenance window for plants in the future based on
